Hornets part with veterans Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Marvin Williams

Veteran forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was waived by the Charlotte Hornets Saturday, and is reportedly likely to sign with the Dallas Mavericks.

The Hornets also completed a buyout for veteran Marvin Williams, who will reportedly sign with the Eastern Conference-leading Milwaukee Bucks once he clears waivers.

Kidd-Gilchrist was a No. 2 overall pick by the Hornets (then-Bobcats) in 2012, and is fifth all-time on the franchise’s games-played list at 433. However, his role slipped over the past two seasons, playing for coach James Borrego, to the extent he appeared in just 12 games this season.

That made Kidd-Gilchrist, in the final season of his contract, a logical buyout candidate once the NBA’s trade deadline expired Thursday. ESPN reported Kidd-Gilchrist is expected to sign with the Mavericks once he clears waivers. The Observer and the Dallas Morning News reported last week that Kidd-Gilchrist was among the Mavericks’ possible trade targets, since they are in need of a midsize defender such as Kidd-Gilchrist.
