Hornets’ Michael Kidd-Gilchrist works out on improving sprained ankle
Among the more welcome sights at the Charlotte Hornets’ training facility Wednesday: small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist moving without discomfort in his left ankle.
Kidd-Gilchrist missed the last 12 games of last season after severely spraining his left ankle. He isn’t cleared for normal activity, but he’s close.
“It’s getting better. I’m excited to be back on the floor. It’s about time,” Kidd-Gilchrist said after some shooting drills. “I’m on the floor, I’m in the weight room. I’m working but not fully cleared yet.”
Kidd-Gilchrist was one of several Hornets veterans working out following the morning summer-league practice. Center Al Jefferson, forward Marvin Williams and point guard Brian Roberts were also in attendance.
Williams headed to Memphis? Point guard Mo Williams, acquired by the Hornets at the trade deadline in February, was close to signing a multi-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, according a story by Bleacher Report.
The Hornets are still looking to add a third point guard. Whether Williams, an 11-season NBA veteran, would have fit in that slot was somewhat contingent on his contract and playing-time expectations. Bleacher Report indicated Williams would get a three- or four-season contract from the Grizzlies.
The Hornets have limited resources with which to sign free agents this summer. One possibility is shooting guard Marco Belinelli, who spent the past two seasons with the San Antonio Spurs. Belinelli is a 39-percent shooter from 3-point range over eight NBA seasons.
Hornets hire shooting specialist: Hornets coach Steve Clifford has added Bruce Kreutzer, a long-time shooting coach, to the staff. Kreutzer has been shooting consultant to the NBA Development League since 2008. He worked with former Hornets assistant Mark Price, doing shot-specific basketball training in suburban Atlanta.
