Hornets agree to trade PJ Washington to Dallas for Grant Williams and Seth Curry, sources say
PJ Washington’s next outing will be for the Dallas Mavericks while Grant Williams and Seth Curry get to come home and play for the Charlotte Hornets.
Washington is being traded along with second-round picks in 2024 and 2025 to Dallas for Willliams, Curry and a protected 2027 first-round pick, league sources confirmed to the Observer. The deal came together quickly after the Mavericks pivoted to Washington once they couldn’t get another one of their targets, Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma.
Multiple teams had inquired with the Hornets over the past few weeks to gauge whether Washington was available. The versatile big man played typically more than one position for the Hornets, which was one of his strengths since getting drafted by Charlotte in the first round in 2019. In 44 games this season, he averaged 13.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists.
Williams, who starred in Charlotte at Providence Day before playing in college at Tennessee, was originally selected by Boston in 2019. He went to the Mavericks in a three-team sign-and trade in July and is in the first year of a four-year, $53 million deal. Through 47 games, the 25-year-old is averaging 8.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists. His specialty is from long distance and he’s a career 37.8% shooter from 3-point range.
Curry, 33, was in the midst of his another stint in Dallas, having previously played for the Mavericks in 2016-17 and 2019-20. During those initial two seasons, he averaged 12.6 points and shot 43.9% beyond the 3-point arc. He signed a two-year, $9 million deal for the league’s bi-annual exception in July. Curry was a standout at Charlotte Christian and started his college career at Liberty before transferring to Duke. He’s the youngest son of fan favorite Dell Curry, the Hornets’ longtime color analyst for Bally Sports Southeast.
