The Charlotte Hornets are apologizing for a skit that initially left a kid without a gift presented to him on the court Monday night.

At the game against the Philadelphia 76ers, the team’s mascot Hugo the Hornet was dressed as Santa Claus and sat at midcourt handing out holiday items. Three letters were read individually by one of the arena’s in-house hosts and Hugo surprised the participants, giving them the gifts to the applause of the Spectrum Center crowd.

One recipient walked away with a PS5 system, but wasn’t allowed to keep the actual gift and instead received a jersey, according to a social media post. In a statement, the Hornets admitted the error and insisted they will do whatever they can to smooth things over and enhance the fan’s next visit to a game.

“During last night’s game, there was an on-court skit that missed the mark,” the statement said. “The skit included bad decision-making and poor communication. Simply put, we turned the ball over and we apologize. We have reached out to the family and we are committed to not only making it right but to exceeding expectations.

“We will be providing the fan with the PS5 that he should have taken home last night along with a VIP experience to a future game. Our goal is and will remain to elevate the guest experience for every person that enters Spectrum Center, and to show our fans how much we appreciate their relentless support.”
