The Charlotte Hornets might have incurred their first serious injury of the preseason Saturday when small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had to be hospitalized after suffering a right shoulder injury.

The injury occurred in the first half of the Hornets’ first exhibition, a 106-100 road victory over the Orlando Magic. Kidd-Gilchrist was fouled by Magic forward Tobias Harris while curling off a pick offensively.

Kidd-Gilchrist missed the rest of the game and was sent to an Orlando hospital in the second half for an X-ray and further evaluation.

Injuries – particularly a stress reaction and a late-season knee injury – limited Kidd-Gilchrist to 55 of a possible 82 games last season. He signed a four-year, $52 million contract extension with the Hornets in the offseason.

The Hornets play the second exhibition Sunday at the Miami Heat.
