The Charlotte Hornets will fill their open roster spot with NBA Development League point guard Jorge Gutierrez, the Observer has learned.

The Hornets opened a roster spot in the trade that sent P.J. Hairston to the Memphis Grizzlies and Brian Roberts to the Miami Heat to acquire shooting guard Courtney Lee.

General manager Rich Cho said during a media conference call Tuesday that he was looking into signing a third point guard, likely out of the NBADL, to fill the role Roberts played.

Gutierrez, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound guard and a native of Mexico, is the player the Hornets have targeted to sign, likely to a 10-day contract.

Gutierrez averages 11.3 points and 5.7 assists this season for the Canton Charge, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ NBADL affiliate. Since Gutierrez isn’t playing under a Cavaliers contract, any NBA team can sign him.

He is shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 20.5 percent from 3-point range this season.

Gutierrez played his college ball at California between 2008 and 2012. He has played professionally in Mexico and has played for the Brooklyn Nets (2014) and Milwaukee Bucks (2015) on 10-day contracts.
