What to know about the starters on Davidson’s baseball team

Following are the starters for the Davidson Wildcats’ baseball team, which will face Texas A&M this weekend in the NCAA baseball super regional’s bext-of-3 series:

CAM JOHNSON

Class: Junior

Position: Center fielder

Key stats: .265 avg, 16 doubles, 43 walks

Comment: A steady hand as the leadoff hitter, Johnson leads his team in walks and is the only starter without an error.

WILL ROBERTSON

Class: Senior

Position: Right fielder

Key stats: .336 avg, .644 slugging, 18 HRs

Comment: The only Collegiate Baseball All-America honoree in the Atlantic 10, Robertson broke through this season with a program-record 18 home runs.

ALEC ACOSTA

Class: Junior

Position: Second baseman

Key stats: .312 avg, .382 on base percentage, 10 doubles

Comment: Before this season, Acosta had one career home run. But his five homers in the conference tournament earned him co-MVP honors.

BRIAN FORTIER

Class: Senior

Position: First baseman

Key stats: .313 avg, 15 HRs, 53 RBIs

Comment: Robertson draws praise as the team’s top power hitter, but Fortier actually leads the Wildcats in RBIs as the cleanup hitter.

ERIC JONES

Class: Sophomore

Position: Third baseman

Key stats: .316 avg, .392 obp, 24 walks

Comment: Boasting the team’s second-best batting average, Jones had 14 hits in six conference tournament games to finish one shy of the Atlantic 10 record.

JUSTIN LEBEK

Class: Sophomore

Position: Left fielder

Key stats: .292 avg, 43 RBIs, two triples

Comment: After just three at-bats last season, Lebek has been a regular starter this year. A 6-foot-1 right-hander, he leads the team with 14 hit-by-pitches.

JAKE SIDWELL

Class: Senior

Position: Catcher

Key stats: .207 avg, 26 walks, 49 starts

Comment: The second two-time captain in program history, Sidwell is also the only Davidson baseball player to be chosen in the MLB draft out of high school.

BRETT CENTRACCHIO

Class: Freshman.

Position: Designated hitter

Key stats: .244 avg, 19 RBIs, 11 walks

Comment: The only freshman starter, Centracchio has made his mark offensively in just 82 at-bats.

MAX BAZIN

Class: Sophomore

Position: Shortstop

Key stats: .213 avg, .341 obp, 35 walks

Comment: After starting 27 games in center field last season, Bazin’s batting average has dipped in his new role but his walk rate has spiked.
