College Baseball Roundup: Florida International tops Charlotte 49ers to take series

Florida International took advantage of three errors by Charlotte to take a 7-5 victory and clinch the series on Sunday.

Chris Mourelle went seven innings and allowed five runs on six hits with three strikeouts to earn the win for the Panthers (11-13, 3-3 C-USA).

Danny Raley and Hunter Jones each had a pair of hits for the 49ers (8-10, 1-8).


Virginia Tech 4, Clemson 3 (12): Tyler Krieger had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games for the visiting Tigers (11-11, 4-5).

The Hokies (12-12, 5-4) avoided a sweep.


Virginia Commonwealth 3, East Carolina 2: An error in the top of the eighth inning helped the visiting Rams (11-10) clinch the series.

Kirk Morgan had a pair of hits and drove in both runs for the Pirates (16-8).

Big South

Gardner-Webb 2, Winthrop 1: Henry Rundio drove in the deciding run and Mitch Warner scattered seven hits and allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings for the visiting Runnin’ Bulldogs (14-10, 4-2), who won the series.

Matt Crohan took the loss for the Eagles (15-10, 1-2), allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts in five innings.

Central Florida 18, Presbyterian 4: The host Knights (20-5) scored seven runs in the first inning and added runs in every inning but the third and seventh to take the series.

Cam McRae, Jay Lizanich and Brandon Martin each had an RBI for the Blue Hose (15-9).

Coastal Carolina 2, UNC Asheville 1: G.K. Young had two hits for the visiting Chanticleers (17-6, 3-0), who completed a sweep.

Nick Shavone took the loss for the Bulldogs (10-13, 1-5), issuing three walks and allowing one run on one hit in two innings.


South Carolina 7, Missouri 5: Reliever Brandon Murray allowed one run on five hits in 5 1/3 innings to earn the win for the visiting Gamecocks (18-6, 4-2), who avoided a sweep.

Missouri is 18-6, 5-1.


VMI 2, Wofford 1: Adam Scott allowed two runs on two hits in 7 2/3 innings to take the loss for the host Terriers (20-6, 2-1), who were denied a sweep.

VMI is 5-10, 1-2.


Louisiana-Monroe 10, Appalachian State 2: Michael Pierson went 2-for-4 for the host Mountaineers (7-16, 2-7).

UL-Monroe avoided a sweep to improve to 12-9, 2-4.


Boston College-N.C. State finale canceled: Game 3 of the Wolfpack’s series against the Eagles was not played due to severe cold in Northborough, Mass.
