College football: 2 schools from the Carolinas on national TV Thursday night
NORTH CAROLINA (1-8, 0-6 ACC) at PITTSBURGH (4-5, 2-3)
Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, 7:30 p.m., ESPN
The teams are actually statistically alike, but the Panthers have been more effective at getting on the scoreboard. Pitt quarterback Max Browne has been effective (only two interceptions) and has thrown for nearly 1,000 yards.
GEORGIA SOUTHERN (0-8, 0-4 Sun Belt) at APPALACHIAN STATE (5-4, 4-1)
Kidd-Brewer Stadium, Boone, 7:30 p.m., ESPNU
The Mountaineers allowed an average of 12.2 points in their first four games. They’ve surrendered an average of 30.2 in their past five contests. But Georgia Southern’s defense has been allowing a league-high 7 yards a play. That means a shootout is possible among these old Southern Conference rivals.
