Temple starts fast, blasts East Carolina 49-6

Temple blew out East Carolina 49-6 in an American Athletic Conference game Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Quarterback Anthony Russo completed 21-of-25 passes for 254 yards and four touchdowns and Ryquell Armstead ran for 91 yards and a touchdowns for Temple (3-2., 2-0 AAC). The Owls picked up 470 yards in total offense against the Pirates (2-3, 0-2).

East Carolina trailed 28-0 before getting a 29-yard field goal from Jake Verity midway through the second quarter. Verity accounted for the Pirates’ only scoring, also kicking a 42-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Temple’s Isaiah Wright scored on a 59-yard punt return in the second quarter, making it six consecutive games the Owls have scored a non-offensive touchdown.

East Carolina is home to Houston next Saturday; Temple is at Navy.

MEAC

S.C. State 21, Morgan State 18: Tyrece Nick threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Omar Cummings with 1 minute, 14 seconds remaining, giving the visiting Bulldogs their first victory of the season. S.C. State improved to 1-4, 1-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, while the Bears dropped to 1-4, 1-1.

N.C. Central 40, Howard 35: Quarterback Chauncey Caldwell’s 3-yard run with 2:44 left gave the Eagles (2-3, 1-1) a MEAC victory over the Bison (1-3, 1-1). Caldwell accounted for 464 yards in total offense for the Eagles.

Southern

Samford 66, Western Carolina 28: The Bulldogs won their first Southern Conference game of the season in convincing fashion against the visiting Catamounts. Samford (2-5, 1-2) led 35-0 at the end of the first quarter as early turnovers hurt Western Carolina (3-2, 1-2).

Wofford 21, Chattanooga 10: Quarterback Joe Newman rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns as the Terriers (4-1, 3-0) remained unbeaten in the Southern Conference. The Mocs dropped to 4-2, 2-2.

CIAA

Winston-Salem State 34, Johnson C. Smith 14: Kerrion Moore rushed for 193 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Dominque Graves threw a touchdown pass for the visiting Rams (2-2, 1-1 CIAA). The Golden Bulls fall to 1-4, 1-2 in the CIAA and play at Fayetteville State next week.

St. Augustine’s 26, Livingstone 15: The Blue Bears dropped to 1-3 in the CIAA, 2-4 overall, in a loss against the Falcons. St. Augustine’s improves to 3-3, 1-1.

CAA

Elon 27, James Madison 24: The Phoenix remained unbeaten in Colonial Athletic Association play with a victory against the Dukes (4-2, 2-1). Elon (4-1, 2-0) got its winning points on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Davis Cheek to Avery Jones with 1:17 left.

Big South

Campbell 49, Wagner 3: Quarterback Daniel Jones threw for 120 yards and rushed for 151 as the Camels (5-1) beat the Seahawks (1-5) in a nonconference game.

Kennesaw State 56, Presbyterian 0: Chandler Burks rushed for 135 yards and four touchdowns as the Owls (5-1. 1-0) won their Big South opener against the Blue Hose (2-2, 0-1).

East Tennessee 45, Gardner-Webb 0: At Johnson City, Tenn., the Buccaneers’ Quay Holmes rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns against the Bulldogs (1-5, 0-3). East Tennessee improved to 5-1, 4-0 in the league.

South Atlantic

Lenoir-Rhyne 34, Newberry 21: The visiting Bears (5-1, 4-0) overcame an early 14-0 Newberry lead and remained unbeaten in the South Atlantic Conference. Lenoir-Rhyne outscored the Wolves (3-3, 1-1) 20-0 in the second half.

Albany (Ga.) State 35, Catawba 21: At Salisbury, Catawba quarterback Ken Avent threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort against nonconference foe Albany State (3-3). The Indians fall to 1-4.
