4 teams from Carolinas to play in college football playoffs on Saturday

Four Carolinas teams will have playoff football games Saturday, including a meeting of two Charlotte-area schools playing for the second time this season.

Elon and Wofford are among the 24 teams named to the FCS playoff field, and they’ll square off at 2 p.m. at Wofford.

Meanwhile, Wingate will visit Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m. in a second-round Division 2 playoff game. Each school beat Gulf South Conference foes in the first round last Saturday.

Elon (6-4) is among four teams from the Colonial Conference landing an FCS playoff berth. The Phoenix struggled down the stretch, after sophomore quarterback Davis Cheek of Butler High suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Elon, in the playoffs for the second straight year, lost its final two regular-season games.

Wofford (8-3) is in the playoffs for the third straight year after sharing the Southern Conference championship with East Tennessee State and Furman. East Tennessee also got a playoff berth, but Furman did not.

The eight highest seeds, led by top-seeded North Dakota State (11-0), have first-round byes. The FCS championship is scheduled for Jan. 5 at Frisco, Texas. The Elon-Wofford winner will play Dec. 1 at Big South champion Kennesaw State, the fourth seed.

In Division 2, Wingate (9-3) and Lenoir-Rhyne (11-1) will have a rematch of their Sept. 24 South Atlantic Conference game, which Lenoir-Rhyne won 31-24.

Wingate went on the road in the first round, beating West Georgia 41-31. Lenoir-Rhyne, playing at home, downed Florida Tech 43-21.

The Division 2 championship game is Dec. 15 in McKinney, Texas.
