How LSU’s notoriously profane ‘Neck’ chant happened at national title game — by accident
Social media lit up when it happened.
LSU football fans’ notoriously profane chant about oral sex attached to the song “Neck” echoed through the Superdome as it topped Clemson for a national title. ESPN microphones caught it. Even LSU quarterback Joe Burrow was spotted waving his hand to the beat.
The chant goes: “Suck that Tiger d---, b----.”
The chant originally spawned from the band playing a version of Cameo’s and Dem Franchize Boyz’s “Talkin’ Out Da Side of Ya Neck.” The song was banned by the school in 2010.
But to hear several members of the band tell it, they didn’t officially play it Tuesday night.
One band member told The State that was the case. Another shouted over a confirmation. He asked his name not be used.
He said the song actually played was “Say Amen (Saturday Night)“ by “Panic! At The Disco.”
The State also learned that multiple former LSU players in attendance who are now in the NFL had walked by the band pointing to their necks, hoping to get the band to play it. There was a reported incident in 2017 when former Tigers star Odell Beckham Jr. asked the band to play it and picked up the tab of a fine, but an LSU spokesman said he did not know of any fine related to the playing of the song.
The band member was also under the impression there was a fine if part of the chant made it on TV.
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” he said. “And they definitely found a song to put it to.”
Tight end Thaddeus Moss said he didn’t even hear the chant when it was played. Offensive lineman Saahdiq Charles said it just made him feel like the game was being played at home.
And fullback Tory Carter said it got him going.
“The ‘Neck’ chant broke out while we were about to run down on kickoff, so it really fired me up,” Carter said. “It was unreal, honestly, to be able to hear that. It only comes around once and a while. It was great.
“I definitely smacked someone on that kickoff.”
