Gamecocks great DJ Swearinger gets new deal with NFC South team
Former South Carolina star D.J. Swearinger has landed in a familiar spot.
Swearinger has signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Swearinger’s deal is for one year with a salary of $1.1 million, Rapoport reports.
The Greenwood native ended last season with the Saints after signing with New Orleans on Dec. 19.
Swearinger is entering his eighth season in the NFL after being drafted by the Texans in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft.
He has played for six different teams during his time in the league, including the Texans, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Redskins, Raiders and Saints.
Swearinger spent time with the Cardinals, Raiders and Saints in 2019. He appeared in nine games and made 47 tackles last season.
Swearinger played at South Carolina from 2009-2012, helping the Gamecocks to their most successful stint in program history. He was named All-SEC as a senior, starting in 12 games and recording 79 tackles, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He also scored a pair of touchdowns.
USC won the SEC East and also had a pair of 11-win seasons during Swearinger’s time in Columbia.
The fan favorite hosts an annual charity basketball game in Columbia. This year’s game was scheduled for April 4 but has been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
