Where CBS ranks Will Muschamp among 65 head coaches in the Power 5

South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp has long said he doesn’t particularly care what folks outside of his program and department think about how his program operates.

But that doesn’t mean people stop having opinions or even ranking things. This week, CBS came out with it’s annual ranking of Power 5 head coaches, and coming off a 4-8 season, Muschamp’s ranking took a slip.

A set of CBS college football writers put Muschamp at No. 45 among the 65 head coaches in Power 5, a drop of 10 spots from last season. That put Muschamp between Purdue’s Jeff Brohm (44th) and Indiana’s Tom Allen (46th).

“ When you put rankings like this together, the top and bottom of your ballot are relatively easy to figure out,” CBS’s CBS’s Tom Fornelli wrote. “It’s the middle portion that’s a killer, and it depends largely on personal preferences and biases. Muschamp is one of the more volatile commodities. I had him at No. 47, and he finishes at No. 45. That’s 10 spots lower than where he was last year. Like the man himself, he runs hot and cold.”

Muschamp came in 11th among SEC head coaches, ahead of only first-year coaches Sam Pittman (Arkansas) and Drinkwitz (Missouri, beat South Carolina at App. State last year), and Derek Mason, who is 27-47 at Vanderbilt.

The conference coaches ahead of him are Jeremy Pruitt (38th) and Lane Kiffin (35th). Alabama’s Nick Saban was No. 1 overall, followed by Clemson’s Dabo Swinney.

The Gamecocks are coming off their worst year with Muschamp, a 4-8 campaign that ended with five losses in the final six games. Overall, Muschamp is 26-25 in Columbia, having reached bowls in his first three seasons.

His squad will again face a challenging schedule, which is set to open at home against Coastal Carolina on Sept. 5.
