The replay: Honoring a football legend, the Canes’ fast start and the ACC on the move?

A local coaching legend was honored and the Carolina Hurricanes have become the talk of the NHL in the Triangle this week. Meanwhile, a Triad staple may be on the move as the ACC headquarters ponders relocation.

The Hurricanes wrapped up a four-game home stretch last week at PNC Arena. While the colleges have run the Triangle for so long, Carolina has won over the hearts of local sports fans through the years and the fast start this season is helping.

N.C. State, Duke and UNC were all in action over the weekend on the gridiron and basketball teams got in one final week of preparation before the exhibitions start across the country.

Dick Sheridan NFF HOF

Former N.C. State football coach Dick Sheridan was honored at halftime of the Wolfpack’s homecoming game against Louisville at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Sheridan, who coached at N.C. State from 1986-92, is a member of the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame and will be inducted in December during a ceremony in Las Vegas. Sheridan was selected in the class of 2020.

Sheridan is No. 3 all-time in wins in Wolfpack history with 52. During his coaching tenure, Sheridan won 69.4 percent of his games. Prior to arriving at N.C. State, the Wolfpack finished 3-8 in three consecutive seasons. In his first year, Sheridan led the team to an 8-3-1 record and a second place finish in the ACC.

Carolina Hurricanes hot start

The Carolina Hurricanes have jumped out to an impressive — and record-setting — 7-0 start with a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs, a subsequent 3-0 shutout over the Bruins and a 6-3 display of force over the Chicago Blackhawks.

It was the fourth time in recent history the Canes won at least four of its first five games, and the first time the team ever started a season 6-0 (and, ultimately, 7-0). Of note: Every skater to play for the Canes so far this season has recorded at least one point, a goal or an assist.

ACC on the move?

It’s been discussed for a while now that ACC headquarters, currently located in Greensboro, has been searching for a new home.

That home may be a short trip down Interstate 85. Charlotte is in strong consideration for the next home of the ACC offices. The ACC has been in Greensboro since 1953. The league board of directors approved to proceed to phase two of the evaluation of a new location.

Charlotte would make a strong pitch for the ACC if the conference decides to move its headquarters from Greensboro, city government spokesman Cory Burkarth said Tuesday.

“If the ACC conference leadership makes the decision to leave, Charlotte we feel is the best place for them to be,” he said. “We believe the ACC would be a fantastic addition to what we already have in Charlotte.”
