New Gamecock receiver Antwane Wells already draws an NFL comparison from USC coach
Antwane Wells Jr. hasn’t been at South Carolina long, but he already has drawn comparisons to one NFL receiver.
South Carolina offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield compared the new Gamecocks receiver to Robby Anderson, who played for him at Temple and when Satterfield was with the Carolina Panthers.
“He kind of related my game to Robby Anderson when he played college at Temple,” Wells told reporters Wednesday. “They want to fit me into each and every scheme that they got. They want to take shots and get me one-on-one.”
Anderson and Wells are similar in size. Anderson is listed at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, while Wells is 6-1 and 204. Anderson just completed his sixth year in the NFL and his second with the Panthers.
Wells spoke with reporters Wednesday for the first time since arriving at USC as part of a large transfer class. He is one of seven transfers to sign with Gamecocks, five of which are on campus already.
Originally from Richmond, Virginia, picked the Gamecocks on Jan. 10 over other Power 5 offers that included Auburn, North Carolina, Louisville, Miami and Mississippi State. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
Wells is expected to help the Gamecocks passing game after a productive career at FCS James Madison. He set single-season school records in catches, yards receiving and touchdowns during the 2021 season. His career numbers — 1,853 yards, 119 receptions and 21 touchdowns — rank in the top 10 at the school in all three categories.
“It has been a wonderful experience. It is new and it’s a change. But I love change,” Wells said.
