Video of Hubert Davis, Duke assistant Chris Carrawell goes viral after Tar Heels’ win

A video clip of the postgame handshake line after North Carolina’s 94-81 win over Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium went viral for highlighting Duke assistant coach Chris Carrawell refusing to shake UNC coach Hubert Davis’ hand. Duke assistant Nolan Smith shook hands with Davis, but appeared to look away while doing it.

Davis said he didn’t know what could have prompted Carrawell to brush him off.

“I don’t know what that’s about,” Davis said. “I didn’t play against him, I don’t know him personally.”

Carrawell told The News & Observer via text after the game that Davis, “did not shake our hands before the game.”

Davis played for Carolina from 1988-92. He served the past nine seasons as an assistant coach before being named as Roy Williams’ successor last April. Carrawell played for Duke from 1996-2000 and rejoined the staff as an assistant coach before the 2018-19 season.

Typically coaching staffs exchange pre-game handshakes when they take the court for the final time after warmups. When the Duke staff entered the arena, Davis was not yet on the sideline for UNC.

Davis had to walk in front of the Duke bench to make his way from the locker room to UNC’s bench. The amount of former Duke players still squeezing their way into the bleachers behind Duke’s bench could have contributed to why.

Davis and Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski did shake hands before the game.

N&O staff writer Steve Wiseman contributed to this report.
