All-American Caitlin Clark, Iowa women headline basketball event set for Charlotte

Caitlin Clark, the reigning Associated Press national women’s basketball player of the year, and the Iowa Hawkeyes will face Virginia Tech in the newly formed Ally Tipoff, the Charlotte Sports Foundation and Ally Financial announced Wednesday.

Both teams are coming off Final Four appearances and are projected as top-10 programs for the upcoming season. The game will take place Nov. 9 at Spectrum Center, and will be available on ESPN platforms.

“We are thrilled to host these incredible teams and players in Charlotte for what we believe will be one of the most compelling women’s basketball games this season,” Charlotte Sports Foundation executive director Danny Morrison said.

The Hawkeyes are led by Clark, an All-American who averaged 27.8 points per game last season while leading the country in 3-pointers. Iowa finished the 2022-23 season with a 31-7 record, falling to LSU in the national championship on April 2 in Dallas.

The Hokies are led by reigning Atlantic Coast Conference women’s player of the year Elizabeth Kitley, who averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds per game last season. Virginia Tech finished with a 31-5 record, falling to LSU in the national semifinals.
