Clemson football running back Will Shipley injured after scary hit. Dabo gives update
Clemson football running back Will Shipley walked off the field on his own after taking a scary hit in the second quarter of Saturday’s loss at NC State.
After the Tigers’ 24-17 loss, coach Dabo Swinney said postgame he was “not sure” how Shipley was doing. He told the CW broadcast team at halftime that Shipley had been ruled out for the rest of the game.
“I think they did some X rays maybe on his neck and stuff,” Swinney said. “But I haven’t gotten any results. I was just told (earlier) he’s definitely out of the game.”
Swinney, during his Sunday teleconference, elaborated further on Shipley’s status and said “everything checked out.” Shipley will be in concussion protocol heading into the Tigers’ next game (at home vs. Notre Dame) and his status is TBD.
“They were worried about his neck scans, but all of that came back positive,” Swinney said. “We’ll just have to see where he is. ... We’re just happy that everything checked out with his neck.”
A team spokesperson said Saturday that Shipley was treated on-site at Carter-Finley Stadium and did not have to be transported elsewhere, such as a local hospital.
Shipley, a junior, caught an 11-yard swing pass near the Wolfpack’s end zone but laid on the field motionless for a while after colliding with NC State safety Shyheim Battle with roughly 8 minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Battle hit Shipley in the neck/back area, per a television replay.
Clemson trainers and local EMS personnel tended to Shipley for about three minutes before he sat up and left the field on his own to cheers from the crowd at Carter-Finley Stadium. Shipley went directly into the injury tent on Clemson’s sideline.
Referees didn’t initiate a targeting review on the play. If they did and Battle was flagged for targeting, he would’ve been ejected for the remainder of the game.
According to a tweet from a TV reporter covering the game, Shipley was wearing a neck brace when he and his family walked out of an X-ray room near the Clemson football locker room around halftime.
