USC QB transfer Colten Gauthier staying in Carolinas for new college home
Over a month after he announced he was entering the transfer portal, former South Carolina quarterback Colten Gauthier has found his next destination.
Gauthier will play for Gardner-Webb in 2024, the redshirt sophomore announced Sunday via X (formerly known as Twitter). G-W is an FCS program located in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.
Gardner-Webb offered Gauthier on Dec. 29. The Running Bulldogs have a new coach in Cris Reisert.
Gauthier came to South Carolina as a four-star recruit and threw two passes in three seasons with the Gamecocks.
With Gauthier’s and redshirt freshman Tanner Bailey’s departures, USC has just three scholarship quarterbacks on its roster — Luke Doty (who played wide receiver this season), promising redshirt freshman LaNorris Sellers. and incoming freshman Dante Reno.
Starter Spencer Rattler declared for the NFL Draft, as did sixth-year senior Dakereon Joyner — who was recruited as a quarterback but also played on special teams and at wide receiver, running back. The Gamecocks are looking to add a veteran in the transfer portal but haven’t found one yet.
USC has hosted Vanderbilt transfer AJ Swann, Texas transfer Maalik Murphy and others.
