In surprise news, South Carolina’s Cam Scott will enter transfer portal

Cam Scott is leaving the South Carolina men’s basketball roster and entering the transfer portal, multiple sources confirmed to The State.

Scott’s decision, which was first reported by On3 Sports, comes weeks after indicating he wanted to stay with coach Lamont Paris and the Gamecocks’ program.

“Enjoyed every bit, every outcome, every situation I encountered,” Scott said after the Gamecocks lost in early March in the Southeastern Conference Tournament. “I just wanted to be a big support for my guys, whether that’s on my floor, off the floor. Throughout the season, I feel like I was one of the more energetic guys, even when things weren’t going right, still trying to pick up people.”

Scott becomes the latest member from this year’s Gamecocks’ squad who won’t be returning. Austin Herro, Arden Conyers, Zach Davis, Jamarii Thomas and Nick Pringle will transfer.

South Carolina also will lose three players to graduation — Jacobi Wright and Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk. Rising junior forward and All-SEC honoree Collin Murray-Boyles also might leave early for the NBA Draft.

The Gamecocks have added three players from the transfer portal — Christ Essandoko (Providence), Treysen Eaglestaff (North Dakota) and Meechie Johnson (Ohio State).

Scott averaged 2.3 points and 10 minutes a game. When he did get a chance, he made it count. Like in the SEC Tournament loss to Arkansas, where he logged his most productive game since December, dropping eight points and two 3-pointers on a perfect 3 of 3 shooting in the second half.

Scott was a four-star prospect coming out of Lexington High School and picked the Gamecocks after originally signing with Texas in November.

He finished up his career as the most decorated boys basketball player in Lexington High school history and helped the Wildcats to its first state championship since 2000 when they defeated Byrnes in 2024.

Scott was named S.C. Gatorade Player of the Year for the second straight year, joining Lower Richland’s Stanley Roberts (1987-88), Pinewood Prep’s Milton Jennings (2007-08) and Edisto’s Brice Johnson (2011-12) to accomplish that feat.

Scott was all-state five times and finished with a school-record 2,475 points. He also holds the school record for steals in a season with 100 and single-game scoring record with 43.
