Saturday’s Clemson-Troy football game was delayed by lightning.

Play was stopped at the 10:43 mark of the first quarter with Troy leading No. 8 Clemson 7-0 at Memorial Stadium. The game was delayed around 3:48 p.m. and resumed at 5:20 p.m, a delay of roughly 90 minutes.

Clemson and Troy both got about 15 minutes of on-field warmup time before the game resumed. Fans who had to evacuate Memorial Stadium were also welcomed back inside.

According to local radar, Clemson was expected to see heavy rain and possible thunder/lightning through about 6 p.m.

An earlier notice on the videoboard read: “Lightning has been detected within 8 miles of Memorial Stadium. Leave the seating area and move to a safe location.”

Before the delay, Troy marched down the field and scored on its opening drive with a 44-yard passing touchdown against a Clemson team coming off a Week 1 home loss to LSU. Clemson went three and out on its first possession.

Clemson’s Memorial Stadium had previously been under two pregame lightning advisories (lightning within 15 miles, no delay) and a pregame lightning delay (lightning within eight miles, automatic delay).

The pregame lightning delay, roughly 55 minutes before kickoff, cleared the venue and impacted both teams’ on-field warmup time. But it did not impact the game, which kicked off as scheduled at 3:35 p.m. on ACC Network.

Weather has already impacted a number of games across the Southeast on Saturday, including Georgia-Austin Peay in Athens, Ga., Georgia Tech-Gardner Webb in Atlanta and Wake Forest-Western Carolina in Winston-Salem, NC.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
