South Carolina begins spring practice with Kendal Briles, new QBs. Here’s what we saw

In their quest to bounce back after a 4-8 season, South Carolina was outside Wednesday for its first of 15 spring practices.

Media members were able to observe the first 30 minutes of the Gamecocks’ practice, which started with stretching indoors and spilled into individual drills outside.

Notably, Wednesday was the first USC practice for new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles. While we didn’t get to see Briles working with the entire offense, he was often around LaNorris Sellers and the other quarterbacks.

And, well, Wednesday was also the first Carolina practice for two of those QBs: four-star freshman Landon Duckworth (who’s wearing former QB Air Noland’s old number, No. 11) and Bowling Green transfer Lucian Anderson III (No. 15).

Beyond that, here are some things we saw:

  • On Tuesday, head coach Shane Beamer ran through the list of everybody who was going to be out or limited during spring practice. We saw guys who Beamer didn’t mention that were off to the side, training with the other limited guys: DB Judge Collier, true freshman LB Andrew Harris and WR Charly Mullaly, a Holy Cross transfer.
  • All the quarterbacks had what looked like Go Pro mounts on their helmets, which might mean that Briles is having them watch back at practices or plays from the helmet cam. While there were no cameras attached on Wednesday, those mounts appear to be a new addition.
  • True freshman edge Julian Walker certainly looks ready for college football. With Dylan Stewart limited and not going through practice, Walker (6-foot-6, 250 pounds) was — physically — the edge who stood out the most.
  • A special teams note: Sophomore Max Kelley and Texas Tech transfer Upton Bellenfant were practicing kicks in the indoor while redshirt sophomore Mason Love was catching snaps from long snappers. It seemed to be an indication that Love is going to focus more strictly on punting this year after competing for both the kicker and punter job last year.
