Three Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball players earn All-Conference USA honors
The Charlotte 49ers were well-represented on Conference USA’s all-conference basketball teams announced Monday.
Junior guard Jordan Shepherd and freshman guard Jahmir Young were named to the men’s all-conference third team, with Young making the all-freshman team. Also, sophomore guard Malik Martin was named to the all-defensive team.
Senior guard Jade Phillips earned a spot on the women’s all-conference first team, as well as on the all-defensive team. Junior Christian Hithe made the all-academic team.
Shepherd, who sat out last season after transferring from Oklahoma, is 12th in the league in scoring (14.0), and also fourth in assists (4.1 per game) and 10th in assist-turnover ratio (1.2). Young, a cinch to win the league’s freshman of the year award that will be announced Tuesday, averages 12.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.6 steals.
Martin, a sophomore guard, averages 1.7 steals (tied for third in the league) and 0.7 blocks.
On the women’s side, Phillips is one five players in C-USA to rank in the top 10 in scoring (14.7, 10th) and rebounding (8.3, sixth) in league games. Hithe has a 3.86 grade-point average in computer science.
