Charlotte 49ers land high-scoring point guard recruit from Georgia
Caleb Byrd, a high-scoring Class of 2020 point guard from Covington, Ga., has committed to play basketball for the Charlotte 49ers.
Byrd, who originally signed with Georgia Southern, is ranked as a three-star prospect by 247 Sports. He had interest from several mid-major programs coming out of Newton County (Ga.) High, including Appalachian State, Wofford, East Carolina and Elon. He decommitted from Georgia Southern earlier this month.
Byrd, who’s 6-foot-1, once scored 51 points in a game and led the state in scoring with a 35-points per game average during his junior season at Rome High in Georgia. He transferred to Newton County for his senior season.
Byrd is the second recruit 49ers coach Ron Sanchez has landed in recent weeks, joining grad transfer guard Jhery Matos. Charlotte has lost four players to the NCAA’s transfer portal transfer from last season’s roster.
