Charlotte 49ers lose scheduled game against Norfolk State after MEAC cancels football

The Charlotte 49ers lost a nonconference game from their schedule Thursday when the Mid-Eastern Athletic Association announced it had canceled its 2000 football season due to the coronavirus.

The MEAC’s Norfolk State was scheduled to play the 49ers on Sept. 12 in Richardson Stadium.

Charlotte has three other nonconference games scheduled — against Power 5 opponents Tennessee on Sept. 5 and Duke on Sept. 17 and a home game against the Sun Belt’s Georgia State on Sept. 26.

Word is expected soon from the SEC and ACC on how they will handle football in the fall, with leagues such as Charlotte’s Conference USA likely making decisions of their own after that.

Norfolk State’s Spartans were to be Charlotte’s NCAA Football Championship Subdivision opponents for this season. The 49ers were to pay the Spartans a $275,000 guarantee for the game.
