Before the conclusion of his second season, Biff Poggi is out as the head coach of the Charlotte 49ers.

Following their fourth 30-point loss of the season on the program’s homecoming Saturday, falling to 3-7, 2-4 in the AAC, Director of Athletics Mike Hill made the decision to cut ties with Poggi after the former Michigan assistant posted a 6-16 record.

After the loss to South Florida, The Observer asked Poggi to grade his performance as head coach through 10 games of his second season in charge.

“Terrible. It all starts with me. The entire organization looks like it looks because it’s the way that I chose it to look. All the blame squarely needs to go on me,” said Poggi. “These are the kinds of games that you have as a coach when your team is three and (seven), things don’t end well sometimes. I’m fully aware of that. I’d say my grade has been not good.”

In a news release late Monday, Hill thanked Poggi for his time at Charlotte.

“I am thankful to Biff Poggi for his leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes over these past two seasons,” Hill said in the release. “No one can question Biff’s passion for helping young people succeed in life, both personally and professionally, but our on-field results have unfortunately fallen short of everyone’s expectations.”

Associate head coach Tim Brewster will serve as interim head coach for the remaining two regular-season games while Hill and the 49ers search for the program’s fourth head coach, the third of Hill’s choice.

Hill was just issued a four-year contract extension running through 2030.
