Charlotte 49ers open season in Panthers’ stadium vs. App State. See the full schedule

Tim Albin’s first season as head coach of the Charlotte 49ers is rapidly approaching, and with Friday’s American Athletic Conference schedule release, Charlotte knows its matchups in its second season in the league.

Kicking off with Appalachian State at Bank of American Stadium on Friday, Aug. 29, the 49ers will spend the first month of the season in the Queen City, hosting Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels (Sept. 6), Monmouth (Sept. 13), and AAC foe Rice (Sept. 18) to open conference play.

Charlotte’s schedule features four weekday games, bringing the 49ers to a broader audience in matchups with Appalachian State, Rice, South Florida (Oct. 3) and North Texas (Oct. 24).

While Charlotte leads in-state conference opponent East Carolina 2-0 in the series history, the AAC elected not to put the third installment of the 49ers-Pirates matchup on rivalry week, the final week of the regular season, instead slating Charlotte’s trip to Greenville on Nov. 8.

Albin and his first-year 49ers have two open dates, Sept. 27 and Nov. 1 — ahead of the South Florida (Oct. 3) and East Carolina (Nov. 8) road trips.

The schedule features both the reigning AAC champions Army (Oct. 11) and the runner-up Tulane (Nov. 29), and concludes the non-conference slate with a trip to Atkins to take on Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs (11/22) in the penultimate week of the regular season.

After winning five games in 2024, tying the second-best season in program history, Albin and his staff are focused on competition — across all positions — as spring practice opens March 18.

“We have an elite coaching staff. It’s about competition. Our guys are going to compete when we start spring practice,” Albin told The Observer on Friday. “There will be a lot of teaching going on with our new staff. Every day up to this point has been an evaluation, and one thing that has impressed me and the staff — they want to do it the right way. They want to be good. They want to win. They have a really good work ethic, and that is pleasing to our staff. We’re not a finished product, we have a lot of work to do. But their attitude has been stellar.”
