Johnson C. Smith has hired Kermit Blount, head football coach at Delaware State, to replace Steven Aycock, who resigned in January after a 3-7 season.

Blount has head coaching experience at the NCAA Division I and Division II levels. He joins J.C. Smith after five seasons at Delaware State, where he led the Hornets to a 2-10 record last season.

Before joining Delaware State, Blount was head coach at Winston-Salem State, where his teams went 91-87-3. He led the Rams to an 8-2 record in his final season and won two CIAA football championships in three championship appearances.

J.C. Smith athletics director Steven Joyner Sr. said Blount comes with a “wealth of experience.”

“We are very excited about the possibilities of forward movement for our football student-athletes, football program and university under his leadership,” Joyner said.

Blount was CIAA Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2000.

At J.C. Smith, he will inherit a football program that went 25-36 the past sixseasons under Aycock.

A graduate of Winston-Salem State and native of Richmond, Va., Blount and his wife, Ava, have two adult children, April and Bryan.
