North Carolina has indefinitely suspended senior cornerback Malik Simmons for violating team rules amid two pending misdemeanor charges he faces.

Simmons faces charges of possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana and with resisting a public officer. He was arrested at 1:46 a.m. Wednesday morning on Franklin Street and charged with resisting arrest. He is due in Orange County court July 28 on that charge and then Aug. 3 – the same day the Tar Heels begin preseason practice – for the marijuana charge.

Simmons has started 15 games the past two seasons and was expected to enter preseason practice as a leading candidate to earn one of the starting cornerback positions.

He is listed atop the preseason depth chart in UNC’s media guide.
