Elon wins first Colonial football game

Connor Christiansen passed for 133 yards and a touchdown, and Elon’s defense did just enough to hang on to a 17-13 win over Towson on Saturday.

Towson (2-2, 0-1 Colonial Athletic Association) drove 60 yards to get in the red zone with time waning, but Connor Frazier fumbled the center exchange with 11 seconds left.

John Silas had 16 tackles for Elon (2-2, 1-0), playing in its first CAA game.

Butler 25, Campbell 24: Brandon Collins made a one-handed grab in the corner of the end zone on a pass from Matt Shiltz with 37 seconds remaining for host Butler (3-1, 1-0 Pioneer). Campbell (2-2, 0-1) reached the Butler 31 but a penalty knocked the Camels back and a Hail Mary pass was intercepted.

Chowan 49, Saint Augustine’s 0: Tyree Lee scored four touchdowns (three on the ground) with 35 carries and 218 yards rushing for the host Hawks (3-1). The Falcons (0-4) committed eight turnovers.

Morehead State 34, Davidson 0: Austin Gahafer threw for four touchdowns for host Morehead State (2-2, 1-0) in a Pioneer League opener. Two Davidson (0-3, 0-1) QBs completed 9 of 25 passes for 64 yards and two picks.

Va. Union 33, Johnson C. Smith 3: Devin Anderson caught 5 passes for 95 yards and a TD for the host Panthers (3-1). Austin Jacques had 18 tackles for the Golden Bulls (1-3).

Carson-Newman 62, Mars Hill 38: Damian Baker led the visiting Eagles (3-1) with four rushing touchdowns on 18 carries and 249 yards. Austin Brown gained 129 yards and ran for a TD for Mars Hill (1-3).

Coastal Carolina 31, Bryant 17: Junior running back De’Angelo Henderson led the Chants (4-0) with 136 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

Winston-Salem State 17, Elizabeth City State 10: Rashad Cooper threw two TD passes in the road win, the first for the Rams (1-3).

Furman 24, VMI 21: Brian Ross blocked a punt and returned it 5 yards for a TD and Jon Croft Hollingsworth booted a 42-yard field goal with 4:35 left for the host Paladins (2-2, 1-0 Southern Conference).

Wingate 17, Catawba 0: Lawrence Pittman (Mallard Creek) rushed 31 times for 193 yards and two touchdowns for the visiting Bulldogs (4-0, 2-0 South Atlantic). His carries and rushing yards are career highs. Wingate coach Joe Reich earned his 50th league victory. Catawba is 2-2, 1-1.

Newberry 38, Tusculum 31: The host Wolves (3-1, 1-0) opened South Atlantic Conference play with a win. Braxton Ivery carried 16 times for 108 yards and a touchdown and Kevin Miller had 12 carries for 100 yards.

Charleston Southern 33, The Citadel 20: Mike Hollway ran for three touchdowns as the Buccaneers (3-1) rallied.

Chattanooga 21, Presbyterian 0: Jacob Huesman threw for one touchdown and ran for another for the visiting Mocs (3-1). The Blue Hose fell to 1-3.

Wofford 16, Gardner-Webb 0: David Marvin (East Meck) kicked three FGs including a 50-yarder for the host Terriers (2-2).

Lenoir-Rhyne 46, Limestone 22: Kristaan Ivory scored twice with 14 carries and 158 yards for the visiting Bears (3-1).
