Carolinas football: Presbyterian edges WCU 19-14

Presbyterian scored twice on interceptions, including a touchdown in the closing minutes, and turned back visiting Western Carolina 19-14 in a nonconference Football Championship Subdivision game Saturday.

The Blue Hose (3-2) were trailing 14-13 with less than two minutes remaining when defensive lineman Deonte Davis intercepted a pass from backup Catamount quarterback Garrett Brown and ran 32 yards for the go-ahead score.

On the ensuing possession, freshman quarterback Wes Holcombe threw an interception, and the Catamounts (3-2) lost to Presbyterian for the first time since 1969.

Wofford 17, The Citadel 13

Aaron Miller was stopped inches short of the goal line on the game’s final play, and the visiting Bulldogs fell to Wofford for the 16th straight season.

The Citadel (0-1 Southern Conference, 1-4 overall) had driven 64 yards in 16 plays and were at the Wofford 3 with seconds left. Miller then ran a quarterback draw and was stopped by Dylan Young.

Evan Jacks’ second touchdown run of the game, a 25-yard scamper, had put the Terriers (1-0, 3-2) ahead in the third quarter.

The Bears rushed for 390 yards, with seven players totaling 30 or more yards on the ground. Brevard fell to 0-2, 0-5.

Andy Hibbett rushed for 191 yards and three long touchdowns as the host Eagles walloped the Lions in a South Atlantic Conference game.

Hibbett, who carried only seven times in the game, scored on runs of 58, 65 and 55 yards in the second half. De’Andre Thomas also threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to TraShaun Ward for Carson-Newman.

Jamel Harbison was the offensive leader for Mars Hill, carrying 33 times for 165 yards and two touchdowns.

The Falcons (1-1, 1-4) threatened to tie the game after John’ta Cooper forced and recovered a Virginia Union fumble with 2:22 left, but the Trojans (2-0, 3-2) sacked St. Augustine quarterback Cyril Davis on fourth down to seal the win. Virginia Union led 42-14 early in the second half.
