Georgetown held off the Charlotte 49ers 62-59 in a men’s college basketball game Tuesday at Time Warner Cable Arena.

The Hoyas (7-5) led by as many as 14 points before the 49ers rallied at the end of the first half. Charlotte took a 54-53 lead with 3 minutes, 32 seconds left on a free throw by point guard Jon Davis, but the Hoyas outscored the 49ers 9-6 down the stretch.

Three who mattered

Braxton Ogbueze: Charlotte’s junior guard stayed hot, scoring 18 points and making 5-of-8 3-pointers.

Joseph Uchebo: 49ers center had a double-double, with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Isaac Copeland: Led balanced Hoyas with 12 points.

Worth mentioning

▪ 49ers senior forward Bernard Sullivan didn’t play due to concussion symptoms. Sullivan, who averages 10.5 points and 5.6 rebounds, missed much of his junior season with a concussion.

▪ The 49ers play The Citadel on Dec. 29 at Halton Arena before beginning Conference USA play Jan. 2 at Old Dominion. Charlotte stays on the road the following week, facing Southern Mississippi on Jan. 7 and Louisiana Tech on Jan. 9.

▪ Obgbueze and Uchebo combined for 21 of Charlotte’s 29 first-half points. No other 49er scored more than one basket.

Observations

▪ The upper deck of Time Warner Cable Arena was curtained off, giving the game an excellent atmosphere. Much of the lower deck was full.

▪ Price and former 49ers coach Lee Rose were honored at halftime for being nominated for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

▪ The 49ers, who entered the game making 67.9 percent of their free throws, were just 10 of 20 Tuesday.

▪ Two Hoyas legends attended the game. Charlotte Hornets associate head coach Patrick Ewing sat courtside. Gastonia native Eric “Sleepy” Floyd was also there.
