A former father-and-son sportswriting team at The Charlotte Observer will be honored with an annual $10,000 scholarship, the Truist Championship announced Tuesday.
Ron Green Jr., who spent 23 years at The Observer before moving to the Global Golf Post, is covering Charlotte’s annual PGA Tour event again this week at Quail Hollow Club. His father, Ron Green Sr., worked for decades as a legendary sports columnist in Charlotte before dying in 2024 at age 95.
The scholarship was announced Tuesday inside the Ron Green Sr. Media Center, in advance of the Truist Championship being contested Thursday through Sunday at Quail Hollow.
The grant will be awarded to one undergraduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill each year who is enrolled in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media and has a demonstrated interest in sports communications. The first UNC recipient of the Ron Green Scholarship Fund will be named during the 2026-27 academic year and will be recognized at the 2027 Truist Championship.
Said Ron Green Jr.: “Our family is truly honored to be the namesake for this great scholarship fund. I have vivid memories of growing up playing golf with my dad, and later sitting next to him in media centers doing our best to bring this game to life with our words…. This tournament, and this club, have meant so much to Charlotte through the years, and we are humbled to have the Green family name associated with that legacy in such a positive manner.”
Both Greens have previously earned the PGA of America’s award for lifetime achievement in journalism — Green Sr. in 2006 and Green Jr. in 2023. They were the first father-son duo in history to each receive the honor.
“On behalf of the Truist Championship, it’s an honor to announce the Ron Green Scholarship Fund as we recognize the incredible impact these two gentlemen have had on our game,” said Adam Sperling, the Truist Championship executive director. “The Greens have long been synonymous with golf in Charlotte, but they have also been foundational to telling the stories of our athletes and events around the world and helping to encourage young media members looking to follow in their respective footsteps. Today’s announcement is a celebration of that great legacy.”
