7 high school football games to watch Friday
Mallard Creek (3-0) at Rock Hill South Pointe (3-1), 7:30 p.m.: This is among USA Today’s top national games of the weekend. The visiting Mavericks, ranked No. 1 in North Carolina by the Associated Press, were idle last week, while South Pointe dropped a narrow decision in Maryland against national power St. Frances Academy.
Butler (3-1) at Hough (3-1), 7 p.m.: A meeting of two area powers and two outstanding quarterbacks in Butler’s Davis Cheek and Hough’s Jackson Gibbs. Butler, coming off a big victory over Richmond, is ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press’ 4A poll.
Myers Park (4-0) at Sun Valley (4-0), 7:30 p.m.: Each team is 4-0 for the first time since the early 1980s. It’s a test of the Mustangs’ defense against a high-powered Sun Valley offense led by quarterback Sam Hall.
North Davidson (4-0) at Charlotte Christian (4-0), 7:30 p.m.: The host Knights have beaten two tough 4A teams in Charlotte Catholic and West Ashley (S.C.). They will face another Friday. The visiting Knights (yes, both teams are Knights) are averaging 42 points a game.
West Lincoln (3-1) at Lincolnton (4-0), 7:30 p.m. : Running back Dallas Bridges leads the West Lincoln attack. The host Wolves, No. 2 in this week’s 2A poll, feature quarterback Cordell Littlejohn, who has passed for seven touchdowns and run for four.
Lancaster (2-1) at Nation Ford (2-1), 7:30 p.m.: Can the host team stop Lancaster’s Farrika Grier, who ran for 207 yards last week?
Parkwood (4-0) at Weddington (1-3), 7:30 p.m.: Parkwood, 4-0 for the first time in at least 15 years, faces an explosive Weddington attack.
