Down to fewer than 20 players, former state champion forced to forfeit football playoff

SouthLake Christian, which won back-to-back state championships in 2013 and 2014, will forfeit its first round N.C. Independent Schools playoff game.

SouthLake (3-8), a private school in Huntersville, was down to fewer than 20 players and will not play No. 2 seed Arden Christ School (8-1) in the Division II quarterfinals.

Christ School (8-1) will advance to next week’s semifinals where it will host the winner of Friday’s Metrolina Christian at Raleigh Ravenscroft game.

“Because of the attrition of the season, our numbers have dropped under 20,” said SouthLake school spokesperson Chris Hunt, “and a lot of our team is (made up of) freshman, sophomore and juniors. So a lot of young kids would be forced to play both ways against a really strong school. We’re worried about injury from being overused and because our numbers are so low.”
