Hough to face Porter Ridge for N.C. 4A state soccer finals berth; full playoff pairings

Two hot boys high school soccer teams will meet in the N.C. 4A Western Regional championship game Tuesday night in Union County.

Homestanding Porter Ridge (25-0-2) has won 21 straight matches and has outscored teams 83-9. Hough (19-3-2) has won 13 straight matches and outscored opponents 99-20.

In its win streak, Hough has shut out nine opponents. Junior A.J. Whisenant leads the Huskies with 26 goals and 11 assists. Senior Evan Ashbrook has 23 goals and 11 assists.

The 4A semifinal match begins at 6 p.m.

In the latest MaxPreps rankings, Porter Ridge is No. 3, and Hough No. 7. Porter Ridge beat No. 2 South Meck at home Saturday, ending the Sabres hopes for a repeat state championship.

Neither Hough nor Porter Ridge has ever reached the N.C. 4A championship game. This is the third time in four years Hough has reached the regional, or state semifinal, round.

▪ Three other Observer-area teams will try to reach state finals Tuesday.

In 3A, Union County’s Marvin Ridge (22-3) is at Asheville Reynolds (23-3-2). In 2A, Lake Norman Charter (21-1) hosts Forest City Chase (21-1). And in 1A, Community School of Davidson (19-4) hosts Winston-Salem’s Bishop McGuinness (16-6-1) at Hough High.
