Providence Day’s girls won their sixth straight N.C. Independent Schools’ 3A state championship at Asheville School Saturday.

The Chargers beat Rabun Gap (GA) 36-29 to win their 10th state championship in 11 seasons. Providence Day maintained a narrow lead for much of the game, which was played at a slow pace. In the final minutes, the Chargers got key free throws from freshman Kennedy Boyd and junior Erin Whalen as Rabun Gap was forced to foul.

Boyd finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Janelle Bailey had 10 points and six rebounds.

Providence Day limited two Rabun Gap post players, who are Division I signees, to one basket collectively.

Providence Day finished its season at 27-3. Rabun Gap finished at 26-6.
