↑Mecklenburg County basketball: Three boys’ teams (Ardrey Kell, Myers Park, West Charlotte) and two girls’ teams (Ardrey Kell, Myers Park) take five of eight available N.C. 4A Western Regional spots.
↑Myers Park girls’ efficiency: Mustangs beat South Caldwell 62-23 in a sectional championship. The Mustangs held South Caldwell to two points in the first quarter and five in the fourth. Myers Park had 18 steals, five blocks and made 66 percent of its shots.
↓Lake Norman Charter boys’ free-throw shooting: Team was 12-for-22 in a loss to East Lincoln in the sectional final.
↑West Charlotte boys’ defense: Down 39-37 at halftime to Northwest Guilford, the Lions protected their home court with ferocious defense. En route to a 78-62 win, West Charlotte outscored its opponent 20-6 in the third quarter.
Tuesday’s Top Performers
Isaiah Blackmon, West Charlotte boys: 25 points, including 16 in the first half, of the Lions’ 78-62 victory over Northwest Guilford. Blackmon added nine rebounds.
Zaqwuan Matthews, Henry Richards, Myers Park boys: Matthews had 20 points, including seven in overtime, and Richards had the winning bucket with six seconds left in the 67-66 win at Butler in the sectional championship.
Chase Muhammad, Ardrey Kell girls: 18 points and three 3-point makes in a 62-29 win against Hopewell. Sister Jordan Muhammad had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
RaeQuon Scott, Butler boys: 30 points in a 67-66 overtime loss to Myers Park.
Kody Shubert, Lincoln Charter boys: 23 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists for the freshman in a 76-48 win against North Stanly in the N.C. 1A sectional championship game.
Sage Surratt, East Lincoln boys: Sophomore had a game-high 28 points and nine rebounds in an 82-61 win against East Lincoln.
Stephanie Watts, Weddington girls: 35 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in a 61-45 victory over Crest. She made nine 3-point shots. In her past two games, Watts has made 19 3-pointers.
Tuesday’s Roundup
No. 2 Weddington girls 61, Crest 45: Weddington (28-1) advanced to the N.C. 3A West Regional for the second straight season with a tough win. Weddington jumped to a 23-8, first-quarter lead, but Crest came storming back, closing to 36-28 at halftime and was down 42-34 at the end of three quarters. Crest got 13 points from Adiyah Ussery and 12 from Caleia Jones. Weddington got 35 from Stephanie Watts, plus 11 points and 11 rebounds from Remi Roberts.
Greensboro Page boys 65, No. 6 North Mecklenburg 49: The Vikings (23-4) had their season end in Greensboro. Earlier Tuesday, North Meck star C.J. Bryce was named N.C. High School Athletic Association boys’ player of the week. Page (21-5) will play nationally ranked Ardrey Kell in a regional semifinal Friday in Winston-Salem.
No. 11 East Lincoln boys 82, Lake Norman Charter 61: East Lincoln (22-0) broke open a tight game with an 18-9 run in the third quarter. East Lincoln won its first sectional championship since 2009. Chazz Surratt had 19 points and nine assistss. Cameron Dollar had 14 points and eight rebounds and Hayden Duggins 12 points. Sophomore Grayson Hickert led Lake Norman Charter with 18 points. Senior Barrett Hancock added 17.
No. 15 Lincoln Charter boys 76, North Stanly 48: Freshman Kody Shubert had 23 points and junior Logan Foster made five of eight 3-point attempts as Lincoln Charter (24-6) rolled. Lincoln Charter led 31-26 at halftime but outscored North Stanly 25-8 in the third quarter. North Stanly got 18 points from Stephan Misenheimer.
