Ardrey Kell, which won 27 straight games and qualified for the first N.C. 4A state championship in school history, is the Observer Sweet 16 boys basketball champion for the 2014-15 season.

The Knights will receive a large banner in school colors to commemorate their Sweet 16 title.

It is the first Sweet 16 championship for the Knights, who were ranked as high as No. 39 in USA Today’s national poll before losing 70-64 to Garner in Saturday’s N.C. 4A final. Knights guard Steven Santa Ana scored 44 points in that game, including 33 in the second half.

Santa Ana had the most points by a boys player as far back as can be documented in a state final game. That dates to 1948. Santa Ana’s 33 second-half points is also a state finals record.

Led by Santa Ana, a senior signed to Elon, Ardrey Kell won the SoMeck 8 conference championship and made the N.C. 4A Western Regional for the second straigtht season.

Two ranked teams made state finals this year: Ardrey Kell, No. 4 Ashbrook and No. 7 East Lincoln. Two new teams joined the final poll: N.C. 4A Western Regional semifinalist Myers Park (No. 14) and Forest Hills (No. 16).
