Tuesday’s roundup: Charlotte Christian stops Providence Day, back in NCISAA championship round

Myers Park tennis: Mustangs, who beat defending N.C. 4A state champ Greensboro Page last week, will play in Wednesday’s regional final against Greensboro Grimsley at home. The winner advances to Saturday’s state final. Myers Park, which reached the finals in 1999, has never won a dual-team championship. Myers Park is 19-0 this season.

Carmel Christian boys tennis: beat Caldwell Academy 5-0 to advance to Saturday’s state final. Carmel (10-3), the reigning state champs, will play Arendell Parrott (17-1) at 10 a.m. at Campbell University.

Myers Park girls lacrosse: held off Weddington 16-15 to advance to Saturday’s state final. Elizabeth Robertson and Hannah Perkins had four goals each.

Lewisville baseball: Beat Lake View 6-4 to claim the school’s seventh state championship. Full story here.

Charlotte Latin girls lacrosse: Hawks held off Durham Academy 14-13 to advance to Saturday’s state championship. Durham Academy beat Latin in the 2016 semifinals. Latin (12-4) will play at Country Day in Saturday’s state championship game.

Northside Christian baseball: Knights (20-3) advanced to Friday’s N.C. 2A state private school championship series with a 15-6 win over Rocky Mount Academy. Northside, the defending state champ, plays Faith Christian at Westchester Country Day Friday. Northside’s JT Agosto (four RBIs), Tanner White (two) and Seth Morgan were all 3-for-4 hitting against Rocky Mount.

Charlotte Christian baseball: Knights won their 30th game and beat Providence Day 5-2 in the N.C. Independent Schools 3A semis. Charlotte Christian (30-3) now faces High Point’s Wesleyan Christian (25-1) in a best-of-3 state final series that begins Friday in Raleigh. Wesleyan Christian was the 2016 state champion. Christian won the previous five state championships in a row.

Tuesday’s #BIG5 top performers

Mary Elliott McCabe, Charlotte Latin girls soccer: three goals in a 4-0 win over Durham Academy in the N.C. 3A Independent Schools semifinals. Latin (17-1-2) will play Providence Day (17-2-3) in Saturday’s 11 a.m. state final at Campbell University. Latin will hunt a third straight state title.

Caroline Maltba, Alexander Central: 3-for-4 with a one run scored and seven RBIs in a 10-0 win over Southwest Guilford in the N.C. 4A playoffs.

Jaclyn Perkins, Ellen Ambler Moseley, Carter Williams, Charlotte Country Day girls lacrosse: three goals each for the Bucs’ star trio in an 18-4 win over Raleigh Ravenscroft in the state semifinals. Country Day (11-7) will try to win its fifth consecutive state championship Saturday.

Michael Sanders, Cannon School golf: Sanders, who was named the CISAA golfer of the year earlier this season, won his second straight N.C. 3A Independent Schools state championship Tuesday. He shot a 5-under 67 at the Country Club of Whispering Pines and then beat Raleigh Ravenscroft’s Ryan Gerard in a playoff. Sanders and Gerard both finished with two-day scores of 136.

Ray Torres, Providence baseball: smacked two home runs in a blowout win over Myers Park in the NCHSAA 4A baseball playoffs. Teammates Jason Garfinkle and Satchel Jerzembeck (3-run shot) also had home runs. Garfinkle’s bomb helped Providence erase an early 1-0 deficit. Providence will play at Skyland Roberson Friday to try to advance to a fourth straight N.C. 4A Western Regional championship series.
