8 Observer-area stars make 24-person Associated Press All-State team

Eight Observer-area high school basketball stars made the Associated Press all-state teams, which were announced Thursday.

There were 12 boys and 12 girls named to the team after a vote from 22 sportswriters from across the state were tabulated.

Making the boys team were Hough senior Luke Maye, East Lincoln junior Chazz Surratt, Ardrey Kell senior Steven Santa Ana, Lake Norman senior Hunter Seacat and Providence Day junior Grant Williams. Weddington’s Stephanie Watts and Myers Park’s DD Rogers and Aliyah Mazyck made the girls team. All three girls are seniors.

A little info on each area player:


LUKE MAYE, Hough, PF, Sr., 6-8 – Averaged 20.7 points, 15.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists. Scored 1,923 career points and had 1,369 career rebounds. Two-time conference player of the year. Three-time all-conference pick and four-time all-district pick. Two-time district player of the year. First-team Beach Ball Classic Selection. Will play in NC/SC All-Star Classic. Nominated for East/West All-Star Game, Florida vs. USA Hardwood Classic and McDonald’s All-America game. Committed to UNC. AP all-state pick in 2013.

STEVEN SANTA ANA, Ardrey Kell, G, Sr., 6-3 – Two-time conference player of the year and three-time all-conference pick. Has more than 1,700 career points. Owns school record for career points, rebounds, steals and 3-pointers made. Owns 11 of school’s 27 records. Scored winning basket in regional final, then a record 44 points in state final with 33 in the second half (also a record). State finals MVP. Led team to 28-2 record with 27 straight wins. Team went 75-15 in his last three seasons. Signed with Elon.

CHAZZ SURRATT, East Lincoln, G, Jr., 6-3 – Averaged 20 points, 6.7 rebounds, 8.0 assists and 3.0 steals. Led team to 24-1 finish and 2-A state final. Conference player of the year. District player of the year. Regional MVP after averaging 20 points, seven rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.5 steals in two games. Two days after the state championship game, had surgery for a torn knee meniscus – an injury he played through since July for 41 football and basketball games. Owns 22 school basketball records. Ranks second in school history with 1,548 points and owns record of 531 assists and 222 steals. MVP of East Lincoln Winter Jam Christmas Tournament. State championship quarterback who has narrowed his football choices to Duke, UNC, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. AP all-state pick at quarterback in football and was runner-up for football player of the year in 2014.

GRANT WILLIAMS, Providence Day, F/C, Jr., 6-7 – Averaged 18 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 2.7 assists. Led team to 25-5 record while playing Charlotte area’s toughest schedule. Williams faced four players ranked in the top 20 at either forward or center, averaging 19 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks in those games. Has more than 1,100 career points. Leading vote-getter on all-conference team. Ten-time pick as Charlotte Observer player of the week, more than any other player. NCISAA 3A all-state pick. Being recruited by many D-I programs.

HUNTER SEACAT, Lake Norman, C, Sr., 6-9 – Averaged 18.7 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks. Shot 67 percent from the field. Conference player of the year. County player of the year for the Statesville Record and Landmark. Two-time all-Mooresville Weekly and publication’s player of the year. Two-time all-county and all-conference pick. County player of the year. First-team all-district pick and district player of the year. Has 3.9 GPA. Led team to conference title and 4A sectional finals. Signed with William & Mary.


ALIYAH MAZYCK, Myers Park, PG, Sr., 5-10 – Averaged 14.5 points and four assists while leading team to No. 4 ranking in USA Today and a repeat 4-A title. Ranked as the No. 18 national recruit by ESPN and the state’s top-ranked player. Two-time conference player of the year. Ranked No. 6 among senior point guards nationally. Signed with Southern California.

RYDEIAH “DD” ROGERS, Myers Park, F, 6-3, Sr. – Averaged 9.8 points and 10.8 rebounds for consecutive 4-A champions ranked No. 4 nationally by USA Today. Ranked No. 63 overall by ESPN nationally and No. 4 in the state. Two-time MVP of 4A state final. Daughter of former North Carolina high school star, Wake Forest all-American and NBA player Rodney Rogers. Ranked among ESPN’s top-100 list nationally. Signed to N.C. State. AP all-state pick last year.

STEPHANIE WATTS, Weddington, G, Sr., 5-10 – Averaged 29.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 4.7 steals. Had her third career quadruple-double and is the state’s 11th career leading scorer with 2,556 points. Also ranks second in state history with 374 career 3-pointers. Set state record for made 3s in a season. Four-time conference player of the year. District player of the year past two seasons. McDonald’s and Jordan Brand All-American. Gatorade player of the year for North Carolina. Ranked as No. 24 recruit nationally by ESPN. Signed with UNC. AP all-state pick in 2013.
