Belmont South Point, Shelby, top 2A statewide football poll, hope to top one another Friday

The top two teams in the latest N.C. Associated Press 2A high school football poll will play each other Friday.

No. 2 Shelby (9-1, 4-0) visits No. 1 Belmont South Point (10-0, 4-0) this week. The winner gets the Southwestern 2A championship. Shelby’s loss is to 4A Rock Hill South Pointe, a three-time state champion ranked as high as No. 5 nationally. Shelby lost 25-0 at South Pointe last month.

Elsewhere in the poll, No. 2 Mallard Creek and No. 8 Harding remained in the 4A poll. In 3A, Charlotte Catholic, No. 1 overall, will play at No. 3 Marvin Ridge Friday. In 2A, Lenoir Hibriten holds at No. 3 behind South Point and Shelby.

And in 1A, North Stanly is No. 7 and Thomas Jefferson, 10-0 for the first time, is No. 9.
