↑Salisbury dual team tennis: Hornets finished 24-1 for the season and beat Bartlett-Yancey in the 2A finals. Maria Capito, Julia Honeycutt and Emma Nianouris, Salisbury’s top three players, were named MVPs. Full tennis results below.
↑Charlotte Catholic dual team tennis: Cougars (22-3) beat East Chapel Hill in the 3A state finals. No. 3 singles player Lizzy Fiepke, who won her singles match 6-0, 6-2 and teamed with Catie Nelson to win in doubles, was named finals MVP.
▪ Myers Park’s unbeaten tennis season ended with a 5-3 loss to Cary Green Hope in the 4A finals. Myers Park, the 2016 state champion, finished 24-1. Green Hope finished 17-0.
Hough volleyball falls in NCHSAA 4A finals
Hough’s volleyball team fell to Cary Green Hoope 3-0 in the N.C. 4A state final Saturday.
Green Hope, which repeated as state champion, won 25-14, 26-24 and 25-19. Sophomore Sydney Dowler repeated as state finals MVP. On Saturday, she had 28 assists, nine digs, seven aces and two kills.
Hough made a push in the second set as the Huskies were able to take a small lead, midway through the frame. Then they survived three set points to even the score at 24 a piece before Green Hope rallied.
In the third set, Hough again hung though and survived five championship points before Green Hope prevailed.
Hough (26-6) enjoyed a perfect 14-0 mark in the I-MECK 4A and reached the state finals for the second. Green Hope finished 31-2. Over the past two seasons, Green Hope is 59-3.
NCHSAA 1A/2A/3A volleyball state finals: North Iredell, Community School take titles
▪ North Iredell beat Chapel Hill 3-2 in the N.C. 3A championship. Chapel Hill lost to Cox Mill in the 2016 state finals.
In the final set, Chapel Hill was up 12-10, three points away from the title, before North Iredell scored five straight to win its first volleyball championship. North Iredell’s Ashley Hawkins was named match MVP after finishing with 17 kills.
Chapel Hill finished the season 25-7, 14-0 in the Big 8 3A conference where they were the champions. They reached the State Championship match for the fifth time in school history. North Iredell finished the season 28-2, 10-0 in the North Piedmont 3A where they were the champions. They claimed the school’s second Volleyball State Championship.

▪ In 2A, Carrboro beat West Iredell 3-1, winning 25-15, 17-25, 25-20 and 25-18. Carrboro lost just its third set all season and won its second straight state title. It has played 61 straight matches without a loss. West Iredell finished at 27-3 after winning its first N.C. Western Regional championship this week.
▪ Community School of Davidson beat Roxboro Community 3-0 in the 1A finals, winning 25-19, 25-15 and 26-24. Community School won its second straight state title. Sarah Labadorf was named match MVP. She finished with 32 assists, eight digs, four kills, two aces and two blocks. Community School finished at 22-1; Roxboro at 28-3.

NCHSAA girls cross-country state championships
▪ Lake Norman Charter won the N.C. 2A state title, thanks to a 1-2 finish from senior Sarah Howlett (18:03.43) and Izzy Evely (18:07.57). Lake Norman Charter won the first team title in school history.
▪ In 1A, Franklin Academy’s Caitlyn Burkett won the girls state title in 19:;16.94. Lincoln Charter’s Emily Elliott was ninth. Franklin Academy won the team title. Lincoln Charter was second. Pine Lake Prep was fifth; Gray Stone Day was ninth.
▪ In 3A girls, Skyland Roberson’s Elise Wright ran a time of 18:03.56 to win by nearly 10 seconds. Cuthbertson freshman Madeline Hill was third. Parkwood’s Anna Bristle was sixth, Cuthbertson’s Sarah LaTour sevneth, North Iredell’s Jonna Strange eighth, Piedmont’s Jaeden Phelix was ninth, and Weddington’s Sarah Bechtel was 10th.
Chapel Hill won the team title. Cuthbertson was second and Weddington third.
▪ In 4A, Wilmington Laney’s Natalie Tyner (17:41.82) won the individual race, and Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons won its eighth team title.
NCHSAA boys cross-country championships
▪ Pine Lake Prep’s Conrad Phillips ran 16:09.70 to win the 1A title by 27 seconds over Queens Grant’s Lucas Brown. Bishop McGuinness won the school’s fourth team championship.
▪ North Lincoln won the 2A state title, the third in school history, led by junior Brian Risse, who ran a 16:12.07, to finish third. Franklin’s Nathan Richards ran 16:05.70 to win. The top 15 runners were all within 15 seconds of each other.
▪ In 3A, Mount Tabor won the team title and Tabor’s Cameron Ponder ran a 3A course meet-record time of 15:19.77 to win in Kernersville.
▪ In 4A, Winston-Salem Reynold’s John Tatter ran 15:20.11, eight seconds off the all-time 4A course record, to win the title. Green Hope won the team title.
NCHSAA Soccer Second Round
Marvin Ridge 5, South Iredell 0: Hayden Green and Ben Wood scored two goals each and Patrick Papa added another in a second round win. Freshman goalie Matt Semcesen got the shutout.
Lake Norman Charter 4, West Iredell 0: Adam Kennedy had three saves in the shutout for Lake Norman Charter. Elijah Corbin, Connor Hahn, Jordan Hall and Sloan Schwarzenegger scored the goals. Nolan Benz, Joe Wessler and Kevin Csehoski had assists.
