After beating South Mecklenburg 42-12 Friday, Providence High has jumped six spots in this week’s Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 poll.

The Panthers (8-3) are ranked No. 8 in the poll.

The Panthers enter the playoffs as one of the state’s hottest teams. Since losing 46-23 to Harding in September, the Panthers have won four straight, averaging 45.25 points. Providence and coach Brad Bowles have the most wins for the school since 2010, and its best conference performance since 2005. Providence finished 5-1 in the SoMeck conference, one game behind league champion Harding.

▪ Hough fell out of the poll after a 41-7 loss to Mallard Creek two weeks ago. But on Friday, the Huskies claimed second place in the SoMeck conference with a definitive 47-14 win over a Vance team that entered the game No. 7 in the Sweet 16 and was also playing for second place. Vance fell to No. 11 this week. Hough returned to the poll at No. 9.
