Two Observer-area teams sit atop Associated Press statewide media football polls

Two Charlotte Observer area teams are ranked No. 1 in their respective classes in the final Associated Press statewide media football polls of the season.

Charlotte Catholic is a near-unanimous No. 1 in 3A, where it got 12 of 13 first-place votes.

In 2A, Belmont South Point -- fresh off Friday’s resplendent 35-15 win over four-time state champ Shelby -- got 11 of 13 first-place votes.

Shelby fell from No. 2 to No. 6.
