HS Boys Roundup: No. 1 Cox Mill gets career-high from Wendell Moore, outlasts Rocky River

↑Christian Walker, East Rutherford: 17 points, 15 rebounds in Saturday’s Coaches Vs. Cancer tournament 69-50 win over Triton. Walker was named tournament MVP. Teammate Josh Searcy had 21 points, 10 rebounds, four assists.
↑Micale Harris, Hopewell: 10 blocks in a 54-44 win over Olympic Tuesday. Hopewell (3-1) has won three straight games. Harris, a 6-foot-8 senior center, also had seven points and six rebounds.
↑Unionville Piedmont shooting: Panthers made 10 3-point shots in a 74-29 win over Anson Senior. Clemson recruit Hunter Tyson had a game-high 24 points. Trip Fesmire (13 points) and Braedon Watkins (11) also reached double-digits for Piedmont.

Maurice Brown, Berry: game-high 35 points, four rebounds and two assists in a 79-74 win over Mallard Creek.
Jamarius Burton, No. 8 Independence: 15 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, two steals and two blocks in a 71-35 win over West Mecklenburg.
Jairus Hamilton, Alon Parker, No. 10 Cannon School: 26 points, 15 rebounds, four assists for Hamilton in a 69-41 win over Hickory Grove. Parker had 20 points, five assists and three steals.
Wendell Moore Jr., No. 1 Cox Mill: Career-high 41 points, plus 10 rebounds in a 80-74 overtime win over Rocky River. To start the season, Moore -- the state’s top-ranked junior -- is averaging 34 points and 13 rebounds.
Jaden Springer, Rocky River: 32 points, 15 rebounds, five steals, five assists and three blocks and in loss to No. 1 Cox Mill. Springer is the state’s top-ranked sophomore.
Tuesday’s Sweet 16 Recaps
No. 1 Cox Mill 80, Rocky River 74 OT: After Rocky River outscored Cox Mill 17-9 in the third quarter to take a 51-46 lead, the Chargers (3-0) used a pressing defense to recover and gain a lead. Rocky River sophomore Jaden Springer sent the game into overtime by making three free throws, but Cox Mill won the extra period 13-7. Khalid Davis had 16 for Cox Mill. Darlinstone Dunbar had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Rocky River.
Greensboro Day 53, No. 3 Providence Day 51: The Chargers worked out to a 39-33 lead on the Bengals (9-0), ranked No. 13 nationally by MaxPreps. But Greensboro Day got some big plays from 6-9 junior center Mike Fowler (12 points) -- who got a crucial offensive rebound in the final minute -- and were able to hold off Providence Day, which had a shot to win at the final buzzer. Devon Dotson (18 points, seven rebounds, six assists), Trey Wertz (14 points, three rebounds) and Isaac Suffren (13 points, five rebounds) led the Chargers (5-2), who lost their second straight game to a nationally ranked team. Cox Mill, ranked No. 25 nationally by MaxPreps, beat the Chargers 64-59 Saturday.
No. 8 Independence 71, West Mecklenburg 35: Jordan Mobley had 12 points, Matthew Smith and Andra McKee had 11 each in an easy win for the Patriots (3-0).
No. 12 Marshville Forest Hills 90, Central Cabarrus 68: Trey Belin and Nas Tyson combined for 45 points an easy season-opening win. Forest Hills trailed 17-15 after the first quarter but outscored Central Cabarrus 55-26 over the next two.
Tuesday’s Roundup
Charlotte Catholic 75, Covenant Day 58: The Cougars broke open a tight game by outscoring the Lions 29-15 in the fourth quarter. Riley Berger (17 points), Nick Scibelli (15), Garrett McKinstry (14) and Sean Rogan (14) led Catholic. Malik Beatty had 19 for Covenant Day (1-4), which plays host to Marvin Ridge Thursday.
Charlotte Country Day 83, Gaston Christian 57: DeAngelo Epps had 24 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists as the Bucs won easily to improve to 4-2. Rylan McLaurin had 17 points, three steals, and Alex Tabor had 14 points and two steals. Cedric Patterson had 12 points for Gaston Christian, which trailed 26-9 after the first quarter and 50-25 at halftime.
Charlotte Latin 56, Southlake Christian 50: The Hawks (1-2) got their first win of the season with a strong fourth quarter push. Latin (1-2) outscored SouthLake (3-4) 17-12 in the final period. Madison Monroe (20 points) and Deon Haughton (12) led SouthLake. JP Smith and John Beecy had 18 each for Latin.
Concord First Assembly 68, Victory Christian 47: Stephen Edoka had 16 points, 16 rebounds and Bailey Benham had 14 points and seven rebounds to power First Assembly (3-2). First Assembly limited Victory Christian to just seven points in a decisive third quarter, when it scored 20 points.
Hopewell 54, Olympic 44: Hopewell held Olympic (0-2) to 15 points in the first half and led 39-23 after three quarters. Brice Williams led the Titans with 14 points. Zack Dixon and Donovan Jones had 10 points each for Hopewell (3-1). Jalen Barr had 19 for Olympic.
Lake Norman 78, Statesville 50: Zane Haglan had 22 points and Adam Brazil had 13 as Lake Norman (2-1) won its second straight game. Izaiah Gaithings had 16 points for Statesville (0-3).
Myers Park 66, South Meck 56: The Mustangs got 24 points from Caleb McReed, 20 from John Ingram and 15 from Duwe Farris to pick up a tight win against an arch rival. Farris made three 3-point shots. South Meck, which was outscored 17-12 in the fourth quarter, was led by 19 points from Chris White and 12 from Darien Hayes. Myers Park’s Ingram scored 18 of his 20 points in the first three quarters to give his team a lead. South Meck closed to within 53-52 in the fourth quarter, before Myers Park finished the game on a 13-4 run. Myers Park’s McReed, a junior guard, scored nine of his 24 points in the final quarter, including five crucial free throws in the final minutes.
