Former Independence High football coach Joe Evans is the new coach at Ardrey Kell, Knights athletics director Brian Knaub told the Observer on Wednesday.

Evans, who coached at Independence for two seasons before leaving the school in March, had a 20-6 record.

In 2014, Evans led Independence to a 12-1 record, which included an unbeaten regular season and a return to the No. 1 spot in the Observer’s Sweet 16 poll. Independence had not been there in six seasons.

At Ardrey Kell, Evans will replace Adam Hastings, who left last month to become coach at Providence Day. Hastings had formerly been an assistant at the school.

Hastings was the second coach at Ardrey Kell, which opened in 2006. He was 35-25 in five seasons, including 9-4 in 2014, when the Knights reached the second round of the N.C. 4AA playoffs.
