↑Max Wotell, Marvin Ridge baseball: Pitcher improved to 8-0 after Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Weddington. Weddington got one hit.
↑Landon Shelley, Myers Park girls lacrosse: six assists and three goals in a 20-5 win over Ardrey Kell Wednesday. Shelley has 77 assists for the season and broke the N.C. High School Athletic Association single-season record of 76 set by Marvin Ridge’s Taylor Malseed in 2013.
↑Hickory High baseball coach David Craft: lead his team to a 4-1 win over Watauga Tuesday, earning his 400th win. In 25 years, Craft is 400-236 at Hickory and 420-255 overall in 27 seasons. He was West Iredell before Hickory.
↑Football University at South Meck: More than 200 elite youth and high school players will participate in an invitation-only event at South Meck Friday to Sunday. It’s a training camp run by former NFL players and coaches.
Wednesday’s Top Performers
Paige Bredder, Charlotte Catholic girls lacrosse: four goals in a 15-0 win over South Mecklenburg. Natalie Wallon added three goals in the second round of the conference tournament.
Morgan Garrett, Central Academy girls soccer: Shutout and two saves in a 4-0 win over Mount Pleasant.
Hannah, Rachel Perkins, Myers Park girl lacrosse: Hannah had six goals and Rachel four in a 20-5 win over Ardrey Kell.
Vada Sherrill, Alexander Central softball: 2-for-4 with a run scored and four RBIs in a 10-0 win over West Lincoln.

Providence at Charlotte Catholic baseball, Thursday, 6:30 p.m.: The Panthers (21-1, 12-1 SoMeck) have locked up at least a share of the league title after Tuesday’s win over South Meck. Tonight, they can win it outright. Catholic (15-5, 9-4) can play spoiler with a win.
Ardrey Kell at South Mecklenburg baseball, Thursday, 6:30 p.m.: The Knights (18-4, 11-2) need to win on the road and hope Catholic upsets Providence for a share of the title. South Meck (16-5, 10-3) can tie Ardrey Kell for second with a win.
East Meck at Myers Park baseball, Thursday, 6:30 p.m.: The Mustangs (11-8, 10-1) are tied with Butler for first place heading into tonight’s conference finale and secure at least a share of the league title. Ditto for Butler (13-4, 10-1) which plays at Independence tonight.
Hough baseball at Vance baseball, Friday, 6:30 p.m.: The Huskies (17-6, 12-1 MECKA 8) have won eight straight to earn a one-game league lead heading into the regular-season finale. Win and they win the title. Hopewell (15-7, 11-2) is one game back and needs a Vance upset and a win at home against A.L. Brown Friday to force a tie.
Ashbrook names Jake Eccles as its new athletics director
Jack Eccles is the new athletics director at Ashbrook High School. Eccles, who teaches math, has spent his entire teaching career at the Gastonia school. He was wrestling coach for 11 years and was part of the 2002 state championship football staff.
"All of our candidates engaged in a very rigorous process and our panel members analyzed each interviewee with tremendous diligence. We are very excited to move forward with Coach Eccles as our new Athletic Director,” said Ashbrook assistant principal Craig Smith, who has served as Interim Athletic Director since mid-March. “Coach Eccles has put his heart into Ashbrook and we look forward to his continued passion through the leadership of our athletic department."
