The cute girl starring in the new ‘Benji’ movie? She’s the daughter of a North Meck coach
While most 10-year-olds in Mecklenburg County are probably worried what’s for lunch at school the next day, Darby Camp is working with celebrities and filming movies.
Camp, the daughter of North Mecklenburg boys’ basketball assistant coach Clark Camp, is in Toronto filming a Christmas movie with Kurt Russell that has a working title of “The Christmas Chronicles.”
On March 16, Netflix will debut a new take on the popular “Benji” movie and Darby is one of the stars.
Darby has been on the popular HBO show “The Leftovers,” and is currently on the cast for “Big Little Lies,” where she plays Chloe, the music-loving daughter of a character played by Reese Witherspoon.
The little girl who was attending school at Community School of Davidson for the first semester of the 2017-18 school year has also appeared on Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva” and has been on an episode of ABC’s longtime hit “Grey’s Anatomy.”
Darby got her start in acting through her mother, Lacy, also an actress. Lacy, a UNC Greensboro graduate, submitted Darby for a local role and Darby enjoyed it and, through her mother’s contacts, that led to “Drop Dead Diva” and then “The Leftovers.” It’s led to Darby traveling regularly and having an on-set teacher when she’s working and not in school in Mecklenburg County.
Dad said the money Darby makes goes into a trust.
“Lacy travels with her regularly,” Clark Camp said. “It’s been a pretty fun experience. We’ve met Nicole Kidman and Lauren Dern and all those (stars). They’re normal people, I guess. Darby is friends with Nicole’s and (husband and singer) Keith Urban’s daughters and plays with them at their house all the time. Keith sent us tickets when he was in town last year. It’s been a blast.”
